NDSM Wharf, Amsterdam
Space for everyone
Multi-storey carpark with commercial strip - former NDSM Shipyard
Already a vibrant cultural hotspot, NDSM was a former shipyard located on the banks of the river IJ in Amsterdam Noord. With it’s urban beach and riverside views, the challenge was to create a multi-storey car park that could support a thriving business community and ever-expanding variety of trendy cafes and eco-conscious restaurants, whilst providing local residents with space to breathe.
A place for everything
Home to many International organisations such as Greenpeace and Paramount, and a growing number of residential projects—making everyone feel included was vital to success. As well as hosting all the car parking spaces in the area, a large space underneath the car park was set aside for nearby residents to house other means of transport such as bicycles, cargo bikes and mobility scooters. And, by giving more space over to pedestrians, cyclists and street furniture, we were able to strike the right balance between accessibility and liveability. To top it all off, we developed the roof of the carpark into a rooftop garden along with solar panels, to supply renewable energy to the adjacent residential tower.
“This carpark enables us to encourage residents and visitors to leave their car and enjoy the NDSM-werf without the negative effects of cars on the streets. In our opinion an essential element for creating a high quality environment.”

Smaller footprint, greater footfall
Our team’s careful analysis of this regeneration area and its future demand for car parking, enabled us to significantly cut the number of spaces planned; maximising usage of these spaces for the operator, whilst encouraging less carbon intensive ways to get around. Having less space dedicated to cars, not only had the potential to reduce congestion but also noise and air pollution—making it a great place for people to live, work and enjoy everything this unique community has to offer.
